What works in our education: Information, carrot or stick?

Do information, rewards and/or rules help pupils, teachers and schools? Which behavioural incentives are effective and which do not work?

Thanks to a grant from the National Research Foundation (NRO), Education Lab dives deeper into the world of behavioural incentives and effective educational policy.

Our research into behavioural incentives focuses on four urgent policy questions in Dutch education. These are:

• What are the effects of selection in teacher training programmes?
• What are the effects of information on students’ study choice behaviour
• What are the effects of various forms of remuneration on the shortage of teachers?
• Does educational supervision lead to improvement of underperforming schools?

The research not only answers these policy questions, but also provides insight into what types of behavioural incentives are most effective in Dutch education. Is it rules, rewards or information?
