How do new first graders choose their secondary school?

The Dutch educational system offers a lot of space and options for children in the 6th grade to choose a secondary school that suits their needs. But what factors play a role in this choice? Do children and their parents base their choice of school on factors such as educational quality, or rather on travel distance and social stratification? In this study we investigate which factors play a role in the choice of grade 6 pupils for their secondary school.

The most important conclusions from this study are:
  1. School choice is related to the test scores of pupils and to the quality of the new pupils.
  2. We do not find a connection between school choice and the degree of school success, or the percentage of retention. In fact, we also do not find a connection between a quality measurement of a national newspaper and school choice.
  3. However, pupils seem to base their choice mainly on the choice of their former elementary school classmates and on the travel distance.
