The consequences of academic dismissal for academic success

The consequences of academic dismissal for academic success
What does the research say?

What are the consequences of the binding study advice in the HE for the performance of students?

Binding study advice is increasingly used as a policy measure to promote student performance and academic success. But the evidence mainly shows the short term outcomes of the binding study advice. But how does the binding study advice relate to obtaining a diploma for the program? Are the objectives of the binding study advice achieved?

We examined it on the basis of two cohorts of students from a Dutch university. These students, in total 1707, followed the bachelor’s program in Economics and Business. In this study we use administrative data.

What are the main conclusions?
  1. The binding study advice is not related to obtaining a diploma or study delay. This is especially applicable when students who have just not been promoted are compared to students who have just been promoted.
  2. Most students who have just not been promoted leave the study, but enroll for the same (or a related) study at another university.
  3. The main objective: to get students to choose another unrelated study is insufficiently achieved.
